Welcome to Bishop Douglass School
Thank you for considering joining the team at Bishop Douglass. As a Catholic school we respect and value everyone in our community and demonstrate this in our way of working together. We celebrate our rich and diverse community and strive to ensure that every child achieves and succeeds. Our 'Stage not Age' approach to learning enables us to ensure a personalised pathway for all learners. Our most able are stretched, and those with needs supported, to ensure that all achieve their full potential.
We are particularly proud of our current attainment for students which was recognised by the Secretary of State for schools in his letter to us placing us in the top 100 most improved schools nationally. Overall 97% of our students achieved 5+ A*-C grades at GCSE due to our broad and balanced innovative curriculum, as described by Ofsted. We are delighted to see our Maths and Science results amongst the top in the country. At sixth form level we have achieved 96% pass rate and our three year ALPS score places us in the top 15% in the country. Our results show value added significantly above the national standard.
The school is firmly committed to staff professional development, training and supporting staff to become outstanding teachers. We firmly believe that training and supporting our staff leads to better outcomes for our students. Our professional development programme was recognised in 2013 when we were awarded the Gold Award Professional Development Quality Mark.
Our Sixth Form is oversubscribed with 240 students offering a full range of courses including A Level, GNVQ and NVQ.
We are delighted with the judgements of the 2013 OFSTED inspection: "Bishop Douglass is a good school", "The leadership and management of the school are outstanding. There have been significant improvements since the last inspection”, "Teaching is good and continually improving because teachers are committed to working together to provide the best possible learning for their students."
The most recent Westminster Diocese inspection of November 2010 states that "Bishop Douglass is a good Catholic school with some outstanding features" reflecting the quality education provided within our faith community.
Considerable investment in the building and resources has occurred. We have a new science block and sports hall, including fitness suite available for staff use, and have over 600 computers for student use.
We are proud of the ethos of the school, which reflects our mission statement, values and aims. Visitors regularly comment on our welcoming inclusive school where staff/student relationships are good and every child is valued for their uniqueness. We ensure that every member of the staff and student community has an opportunity to fulfil their potential. You will need to be able to model these aspects and be committed to this approach. You will need to have motivation and drive to develop strategy to move us forward.
There is still much to do to ensure the entitlement and continuing raising of achievement of all our pupils as we enter into our next stage of development.
I do hope that having read this you will want to join me on this educational journey and will therefore complete your application form. I look forward to meeting you on your visit to the school or at interview.
